I taught myself how to make pinatas a few years ago. It was an
opportunity to do something special for my girlfriend's birthday. I
thought it would be funny to pull out a Sponge Bob pinata and trick her
into thinking it was her only present. Needless to say it was a
disaster.
Without prior experience I chose a cereal box as a frame for the pinata
and rushed the paper mache process. The end result was a damp, poorly
painted Sponge Bob pinata filled with candy and toys that smelled just
like the damp newspaper that surrounded them. In addition, a damp pinata
is a resilient pinata. Without properly drying, the pinata will not
break open.
We beat Sponge Bob mercilessly with a hammer. It had little effect.
I continued to make pinatas, but I switched to using balloons as a
frame. I gave them out to children I knew through family and friends.
Soon enough, people started paying me for my work. I had one of those
moments where I wanted to frame the money from my first sale, but like
all cash in my wallet, I ended up buying groceries.
Pinatas are fantastic. After a few years of practice, I am ready (well
almost ready) to sell them online. Follow this blog if you are
interested. Contact me if you want to purchase one, or if you have any
suggestions.
